Wed, 19 Nov 2008 01:12:11 PST- All of Northwestern's 23 seniors chose to come to Evanston after the Wildcats posted 6-6 seasons. Then, when they were freshmen, record-setting quarterback Brett Basanez (now with the Carolina Panthers) led the way to a 7-4 regular-season mark and a trip to the Sun Bowl.
But then came the lean and tragic years. Coach Randy Walker passed away in June 2006. Pat Fitzgerald, the nation's youngest Div. I-A coach, took over one of the nation's younger teams and directed 4-8 and 6-6 seasons. In the offseason, the large and experienced senior class dedicated itself to finishing their careers with something special.
Heading into Saturday's regular-season finale at home against Illinois, the Wildcats have done just that.

Bacher threw touchdown passes on his first two drives of the second half to lift Northwestern Football to a 21-14 win Saturday over the Wolverines, handing them eight losses overall and five at home for the first time in the storied program's 129-year history.

Kafka ran for 6 yards early in the second quarter on his last play Saturday. He was replaced by C.J. Bacher, who started the game. Kafka started the previous two games and had 300 yards rushing, setting a record for a Northwestern Football quarterback in consecutive games.
